One-line vs three-line diagrams for solar

Both drawings describe the same system. They differ in how much they make explicit, and choosing wrong costs you a review cycle.

The one-line

Every circuit is one stroke. Conductor count is shown with tick marks or an annotation like `(2) #10 PV + (1) #10 EGC`. It is compact, it fits a residential system on a single sheet, and it is what most AHJs expect for a house.

Use it when: residential PV, straightforward interconnection, and the AHJ's checklist says "one-line" or "single-line".

The three-line

Each conductor is drawn: L1, L2, neutral, equipment ground. Phase relationships, transformer connections and where the neutral is bonded are all visible rather than inferred.

Use it when: commercial or three-phase work, a service with a transformer, anything with a transfer switch or multiple sources, or when the AHJ asks by name.

What a reviewer is actually checking

The same things either way: that conductors are sized after derating, that overcurrent devices protect them, that a disconnecting means exists where required, that grounding and bonding are complete, and that the interconnection satisfies 705. The diagram type only changes how quickly those facts can be found.

That is why an annotated one-line often reviews faster than a sparse three-line. Detail that is present but unlabelled is not detail.

When you are asked for the one you did not draw

It happens: you submit a one-line and the correction says "provide three-line". Two honest options.

Symbols matter more than you think

A reviewer recognises IEEE 315 / IEC 60617 symbols instantly. Decorative icons make them slow down, and a reviewer who has slowed down is a reviewer looking for something. If your tool offers a standards symbol mode, use it for submittal.

Practical advice

1. Read the AHJ checklist first. It usually names the diagram it wants. 2. Annotate heavily either way. Size, count, EGC, raceway, OCPD on every run. 3. Show the busbar arithmetic on the sheet that carries the interconnection. 4. Keep both available. Being able to produce the other on request turns a correction into an email.

What is the difference between a one-line and a three-line diagram?
