Keyed conductor callouts on solar plans

Open almost any single-line from a working EPC and you will find small triangles on the conductor runs, lettered A, B, C, D, each pointing at a row in a schedule. It is a convention worth understanding, because it is the difference between a sheet that stays readable at 11x17 and one that becomes a wall of overlapping text.

What the tag replaces

Annotating every run inline works until two devices sit close together. Then the callouts collide, and a wire size a reviewer cannot read is the same as one that is not on the drawing at all. A keyed tag moves the detail into a table:

Why letters, and which letters

Use letters rather than numbers so the tags never collide with circuit numbers, sheet numbers or note numbers already on the sheet. And skip I, O and Q — on a plotted drawing they read as 1 and 0. Panel schedules skip them for the same reason.

The rule people get wrong: stability

Tags should key off something stable about the run, not its position in a list.

Here is why. A plan checker marks up your sheet, sends corrections, and you resubmit. They compare the new sheet to the old one. If your tags were assigned by array order and you added one circuit, every tag after it shifted — so tag C on the resubmittal is a different run than tag C on the sheet they marked. Now they cannot trust any of their notes and they re-review the whole thing.

Assign tags from a stable identifier for each run. Add a circuit and it takes the next free letter; the others do not move. The diff stays honest, and so does the reviewer's markup.

What belongs in the keyed schedule

Four facts per run, the same four a reviewer checks on any conductor:

Comms and grounding-electrode runs are usually left off the keyed set and shown on the full circuit schedule instead. The keyed tags are for power.

Know when to stop

Past roughly eight tags the sheet stops being a drawing. If a system has more power circuits than that, tag the ones that carry the argument and put the rest on the circuit schedule — and say that is what you did. Silent truncation reads as "this is everything" when it is not.
