What's in a solar permit set?

A residential solar permit set is a small package of drawings and calculations that proves the system is safe, code-compliant and buildable. AHJs vary, but a complete set is remarkably consistent. Here's what's in one and what each sheet has to show.

1. Cover sheet

Project and customer info, the AHJ and utility, the enforced NEC/IBC edition, a system summary (DC/AC size, module and inverter counts), general notes and a sheet index.

2. Site / plot plan and roof plan

A plot plan — property lines, structures, setbacks, north arrow, street — and a roof plan showing the array layout to scale with fire-access pathways and setbacks (IFC 605), plus equipment locations.

3. Structural and attachment

The roof framing, added dead load, wind and snow criteria (ASCE 7), attachment spacing and fastener embedment, and a typical mounting detail. Many AHJs require a stamp when the structure is loaded near capacity.

4. Three-line / one-line diagram

The electrical heart of the set: every component (array, inverter, disconnects, combiner, meter, service), conductor types and sizes, OCPD ratings, grounding and bonding, and the point of interconnection. This is the sheet reviewers scrutinize most.

5. Label and placard schedule

The plaque/directory at the service, PV disconnect labels and rapid-shutdown marking (705.10 / 690.56) — listed explicitly so an inspector can verify them.

6. Load and interconnection calcs

A service load calculation (NEC 220.82/83/87 for dwellings) and the interconnection math — the 705.12 busbar 120% check or a supply-side tap — showing the system fits the service.

7. Manufacturer datasheets

The module datasheet, the inverter/microinverter datasheet and the racking installation and structural manual. In a real approved set these attachments are often the majority of the pages.
