What a PE stamp certifies on a solar plan set
A stamp is not a formality and it is not a signature of approval on someone else's homework. It is a licensed professional assuming legal responsibility for engineering judgement.
What is being certified
When a PE seals a sheet, they are attesting that the engineering shown on it was performed by them or under their responsible charge, and that in their professional judgement it complies with applicable codes and standards.
They are not certifying:
- That the installation will match the drawing.
- That the equipment will perform as advertised.
- That the AHJ will approve it.
- Anything on sheets they did not seal.
That last point matters on a PV set. A structural stamp on the racking sheets says nothing about the electrical design.
When solar work typically needs one
| Situation | Stamp commonly required |
|---|---|
| Standard flush roof mount, listed racking | Often none — prescriptive path |
| Tilt legs, ballasted, or unusual attachment | Structural |
| Ground mount with foundations | Structural, sometimes geotechnical |
| Commercial interconnection | Electrical |
| Existing roof of uncertain condition | Structural |
| Engineered field-assembled ESS | Electrical, under supervision |
Always read the AHJ's own submittal checklist. The variation between neighbouring jurisdictions is larger than most people expect.
The professional-supervision problem
Plan sets are increasingly produced by software or by an outsourced designer, then sent to an engineer for a stamp. That arrangement is legitimate only if the engineer exercises responsible charge: reviews the design, understands its inputs, corrects what needs correcting, and adopts it.
An engineer who stamps a set they merely received is exposed, and so is the installer relying on it. Boards discipline this regularly.
What makes a set easy to stamp
Engineers charge for risk as much as for time. A set that shows its work reduces both:
- Every number carries its code section. An engineer verifying `Isc 13.94 A x 1.25 = 17.43 A -> 20 A OCPD (690.8)` spends seconds, not minutes.
- Assumptions are stated. Ambient temperature, conductor count, run length — labelled as assumptions where they are assumptions.
- The design is internally consistent. Schedules that match the diagram; a title block that matches the site.
- The compliance basis is explicit. Which NEC edition, which structural criteria, which wind and snow loads.
This is the principle behind OneLine Studio's compliance sheet: the arithmetic is printed next to the finding, cited to the section, so a reviewing engineer is checking work rather than reconstructing it.
A stamp does not fix a wrong design
Worth saying plainly, because it gets treated as insurance. If the busbar arithmetic is wrong, a stamp makes it a stamped wrong drawing. Get the design right, then get it sealed.

FAQ
Does a residential solar permit need a PE stamp?
It depends on the jurisdiction. Many accept an unstamped set for simple residential PV; a structural stamp is commonly required for non-standard mounting, and some AHJs require an electrical stamp for anything interconnected.
What does a PE stamp mean?
That a licensed professional engineer takes professional responsibility for the engineering work shown, having exercised direct control and personal supervision over it.
Can an engineer stamp a drawing someone else produced?
Only if they have exercised responsible charge over the work — reviewed, corrected and adopted it as their own. Stamping work you did not supervise is a licence-board matter in every state.
