Not every solar job ends with the system matching its original drawings exactly. When field conditions force a change, as-built drawings document what was actually installed. Some AHJs and utilities require them to close out the permit, so it helps to know when they apply and what they must show.

What as-built drawings are

As-built drawings are the permit set updated to reflect the system as it was truly installed. Where the original design showed the intended layout, equipment, and routing, the as-builts capture reality — including any changes made in the field.

They matter because the AHJ's inspection and the utility's interconnection are both based on what is physically on the roof and at the service. If the install diverged from the stamped plans, the paperwork has to catch up.
