Every PV system needs a clear, safe way to isolate equipment for service and emergencies. NEC 690.15 defines the disconnecting means that separates PV system equipment from the conductors, and it sets the rules for how those switches are rated, grouped, and marked. Getting the disconnect right is one of the most scrutinized items on any residential plan.

What 690.15 covers

690.15 addresses the disconnecting means for isolating PV equipment — the inverter, and any DC combiner or charge controller — from its energized conductors. It works alongside the general disconnect rules of Article 690 Part III and the interconnection disconnect requirements of Article 705. Think of it as the article that makes sure you can safely open the circuit at the equipment you need to service.

Ratings and load-break capability

The core requirement is that a disconnecting means intended to be operated under load must be able to interrupt the maximum circuit current at the system voltage. Two common device types satisfy this differently:

Location and accessibility

690.15 requires the disconnect to be readily accessible, but the exact placement is usually driven by your AHJ and utility. Many jurisdictions require a lockable, exterior disconnect adjacent to the service meter so a lineman or firefighter can kill the system from outside. Others accept an indoor disconnect. How it ties into the rest of the design

The PV disconnect current rating flows directly from your conductor and OCPD sizing. If you size the inverter output circuit conductor and breaker per 690.8 and 240.6, the disconnect simply has to match or exceed those ratings. Under-rating the disconnect is a fast rejection.
