Do I need a battery with solar?

What a battery actually does
Two very different jobs get lumped together:

- Offset / self-consumption — stores daytime solar to use at night instead of buying it back from the utility.
If you don't need either, you probably don't need a battery.
When a battery makes sense
- Frequent or long outages — storms, wildfire shutoffs, or a rural line make backup genuinely valuable.
- Poor net metering — if your utility pays little for exported power, storing it for your own evening use is worth more than selling it cheap.
- Time-of-use rates — charge the battery when power is cheap or free (your own solar), discharge during expensive peak hours.
- Critical loads — medical equipment, a home office, a well pump you can't be without.
When you can skip it
If your area has reliable grid power and full-retail net metering, the grid already acts like a free, unlimited "battery" — you bank credits by day and draw them back at night. Adding storage there is a comfort-and-resilience choice, not a bill-saving one.
Rough sizing
Battery sizing is about backup, not offset. Add up the loads you want to ride through an outage, times the hours:

The trade-offs

A note on doing it right
Batteries involve significant stored energy and their own code requirements for placement and disconnects. Like the rest of the system, a licensed electrician or PE must design and connect storage — this is not a safe DIY grid-tie job. Start by nailing your system size, then decide on backup.
